Nobody writes more creatively about nature than Barry Lopez. This is a collection of previously published material, published in various journals, and not all from his published books (so you're likely to find new material even if you've read every book Lopez has written). If you're a Barry Lopez fan, you will want to add this one to your library. I'm glad I did.

Through his writing Barry Lopez has inspired me to explore canyons, raft the Colorado River and trek and kayak in arctic lands. His writing style is unique, engendering wonder, mystery and gratitude for being alive to experience the natural world. The heron story is especially majestic, building on the heron dance in his River Notes story, The Drought, which always brings tears. The woodcuts compliment the stories and are amazing in their own right.

Reading Barry Lopez is simply a pleasure that should not be missed. Always well researched and written it is just as often magical and spiritual displaying a deep respect of nature.

Barry Lopez is best known for his non-fiction nature writing. In "Outside" Lopez presents five or six short fictional stories. Lopez writes with his normal grace and the illustrations are wonderful.
