Their service is fine. Unfortunately, due to a pressing error by the manufacturer, two of the discs were unplayable. Whether it was just the two discs in my set, or the same two discs in that particular pressing run i do not know.Am currently waiting for a return label to be sent to me from whom I ordered.

Great collection of jazz. I didn't everything but it's great to fill my carousel CD player with it and get things done.

I had only heard of references to him on a Charlie Mingus recording. I saw the Netflix documentary about Lee Morgan, and I really appreciate his music.

All of these albums in this collection feature flawless performances from the great Lee Morgan.

Love it! Learned about Lee from a documentary I watched. Great packaging for so many CDs. Easy set to have in car.

Back in the Sixties, as I was developing an awareness for good jazz, and not just the funky stuff, Lee Morgan and his groups on the SIDEWINDER and RUMPROLLER LPs served as my intro to the great Blue Note material. Lee and his bandmates (especially Joe Henderson and others) drilled into my tastebuds. Morgan was a trumpeter's trumpeter, at once brassy, athletic and/or lovely. It's easy to feel every piece of his soul on these recordings. You can't go wrong with Lee Morgan and the musicians he works with. It's very sad that his life here ended with such tragedy.

これも発表後50年が経過して版権が切れたアルバムが取りまとめられて、コンパクトかつ安価で提供されているシリーズの１つ。本家本元のBlue Noteからも出てたんですね。少々ビックリしました。通称Originalシリーズと呼ぶことにします。遅れてLee Morganファンになった者にとっては一度にまとめて聴けるので大変有り難い。この手のLee Morgan関係のものは、・ Lee Morgan Eight Classic Albums 　REGOJ(Real Gone Jazz)　通称Classicシリーズ・ Lee Morgan The Complete Recordings: 1956-1962 　ENLIG(Enlightenment)　通称Completeシリーズくらいしかないと、それまで思っていました。大好きな「Desert Moonlight」収録の『Rumproller』や未知の『Delightfulee』『Search for the New Land』はそのどちらにも載っていません。なので、これらは単独で購入するしかないかなと半ば、あきらめかけていました。しかし、このシリーズを発見して、これらが載っていることが分かり、助かりました！価格はClassic、Completeシリーズに較べたら少々高めですが、本家本元なので安心できるし、1アルバム1CDになっていて、その分の経費もかかっていると思うのでやむ無しか？それにしても1963年の『The Sidewinder』がどのシリーズにも載っていないのは残念。《追伸》『The Sidewinder』や『Rumproller』が載っているこの手のアルバムを発見しました。上記のENLIGから出てました。以下です！・ Lee Morgan Eight Classic Albums 　Enlightenment　通称Classic(ENLIG)シリーズただ、アルバム名が上記のREGOJのアルバムと同じなので、少々紛らわしいですが。。。〜私はﾚﾋﾞｭｰ内容をｱｯﾌﾟした後も随時更新して内容を充実させています〜 Lee Morgan Eight Classic AlbumsLee Morgan The Complete Recordings: 1956-1962Lee Morgan Eight Classic Albums

Con Morgan sto facendo la stessa operazione di recupero che sto facendo con molti musicisti jazz che ho trascurato per fretta o per troppa voglia di esplorre altri mondi. In questo "recupero" mi avvalgo dell'aiuto di Lorenzo 79 ormai mio tutor in questo percorso.Questo cofanetto della Blue Note offre 5 albums del trombettista di Philadelphia.Lo so, sono operazioni che ai collezionisti fanno storcere il naso, ma offrono la possibilità di avere parecchio materiale a un prezzo vantaggioso.E con un artwork tutto sommato apprezzabile. Ogni dischetto è nel proprio cartonato che offre la copertina originale e sul retro i dati essenziali, formazione, brani, date e luogo di registrazione. Mancano solo le note descrittive del lavoro...insomma un lavoro più che accettabile credo.Cinque album dunque, che vanno dal 1957 di "The cooker" al 1966 di "Delightfulee". Un lasso di tempo che da modo di cogliere l'evoluzione musicale di questo artista, ingiustamente classificato come hard bopper.Segnalo in particolar modo due album (che sono poi quelli che mi aveva indicato Lorenzo) "Lee Way" e soprattutto "Search for the new land"."Lee Way" aderisce in pieno ai canoni dell'hard bop ed è anche intriso di umori blues. Da paura la sezione ritmica con Paul Chambers, Art Blakey e Bobby Timmons (questi ultimi suoi compagni nei Messaggeri di Blakey) e un ispirato ma mai dirompente Jackie McLean (molto più irruente nei suoi album del periodo). Quattro brani proposti di cui due vere perle assolute; "The lion and the wolf" (dedicata ai fondatori della Blue Note) dove si assiste al perfetto sincronismo tra Blakey e Timmons (quest'ultimo si rifà chiaramente allo stile boogie) e con Morgan che tira fuori un assolo da brividi. L'altro brano è "Midtown blues" scritto da McLean e qui sono proprio i due fiati a duellare e a prodursi in soli di grande intensità."Search for the new land" è un capolavoro fatto e finito. Un album che abbandona gli stilemi hardboppistici per avvicinarsi a quel modalismo che John Coltrane aveva codificato nei primi 60. Fà quasi specie pensare che scorrono pochi mesi tra questo album e il precedente "The sidewinder" per quanto suonano diversi.Merito anche di un ispiratissimo Wayne Shorter che era nella fase più matura del suo talento (inutile elencare le gemme che ha realizzato nel biennio 64/65). Non cito brani, sono tutti scandalosamente belli...ma il titolo dell'album è alquanto chiaro..con questo album Morgan stava cercando sul serio un nuovo mondo musicale.Due parole (solo due per non annoiarvi troppo non per la qualità dei dischi) sul resto dei dischi"The cooker" del 1957 con un Morgan appena diciannovenne e quello che più aderisce a standard boppistici e lo si evince anche dalla scelta dei brani, i classici standard palestra di virtuosismo e quella "A night in Tunisia" di Gillespie vero brano manifesto del genere."The rumproller" del 1965 è un bel disco ma credo sia anche un tentativo di tornare alle sonorità di "Sidewinder" che è stato il più grosso successo commerciale di Morgan. Insomma il trombettista non segue la strada intrapresa da "Search.." ma preferisce tornare sui lidi più tranquilli. Un bel disco ma nulla di più."Delightfulee" del 1966 è invece album di assoluto valore e alquanto particolare in quanto sui 10 brani proposti sei si avvalgono di una orchestra diretta da Oliver Nelson (e già questo è garanzia di qualità). A tale proposito è utile ascoltare le due versioni proposte di "Zambia", la prima in quintetto e la seconda con l'orchestra.A non farmi impazzire è la versione di "Yesterday" dei Beatles che sento più come un tentativo di accattivarsi un certo pubblico che non una vera urgenza espressiva. Ma a parte questo credo sia un album di estremo valore.

I got this because of "Search for the New Land", which is Morgan's best album imo. The title tune is a lengthy, dreamy modal exploration, reminding me somewhat of Hancock's own "Maiden Voyage". The rest are more familiar hard-bop territory, but they all have memorable heads and great interplay with the stellar musicians. "Mr. Kenyatta" is particularly superb in its dual-harmony horns, as is the fantastic ballad "Melancholee." There's no weak track among the five, though: "The Joker" and "Morgan the Pirate" are almost ridiculously catchy, without succumbing to predictability. Overall, there's more space here, compared to some other Lee albums."The Cooker" has some brilliant moments as well, particularly the opener "Night in Tunisia." Philly Joe Jones' thudding toms open up a wild and steamy ride, with a lot of flashy trumpet playing from the 19-year old (!) Morgan. I generally prefer Lee's original compositions to the standards, and luckily there are two of his own pieces. This album is the epitome of hard bop, and the recording makes the ensemble sound as if heard straight from a packed, smoky club stage.
