Funny and adorable.
My son is biracial, and while it's getting better, there's a shortage of characters that look like him in children's media. Huey is about my son's age and is just adorable. This is a great companion to Stories Julian Tells. The stories are divided by chapter, so it's easy for a very young child to follow along. They're very sweet and funny. My son loved them.

Wonderful
I just love all of the books by this author that we have read as read aloud chapter books for my 4 and 6 year old. They are great. I love all the characters, and each chapter us like a separate story, and we go back to this and the others and reread their favorite chapters often. Kids like the pictures too. Great non scary, well written, clever, kind, early chapter books.

Stories Huey Tells
This book will be given as part of a library that is being established for children in Kenya. This seems like a book that will interest young children and will inspire them to read. The wording is simple, and I love the colorful book cover with the boy and the zebra. Perfect for young minds.

Not as good as the first 5 Julian books
We liked the first 5 Julian books (absolutely loved the first book). Unfortunately, the Huey books are poorly written. There's poor grammar like "he looks to be abandoned" (talking about a stray dog), and "one I dreamed lots of times, and every time I dreamed it, it got worse" (speaking about a bad dream). Even though the author intended to write from Huey's point of view, a child his age should be able to speak/think clearly and concisely, with correct grammar. I actually had to edit some of the text before handing it to my son to read, as some of the sentences weren't very clear. Additionally, the stories were decent but not great. The story about the animal prints made the older kids/adults appear brainless; I mean who would actually believe a zebra or elephant stopped by their house overnight? Perhaps a family living on a wildlife preserve, or a 3 year old? Check it out from your local library, or even skip the Huey books entirely. If you like the first Julian book, I would suggest stopping after reading the next 4 Julian books.
