Great book, great value, could have been shipped BETTER!
This is a mixed review: the book is great, the shipping (packing) was questionable!I had looked at this book before on the NFL-Steeler site and they wanted $20-25 for it there at the time. I was looking for gifts for a "Steeler Maniac" relative who does not live near Pittsburgh anymore. Anything "Steeler" is always greatly loved and appreciated by her.She loves this book however there was a delay in giving it to her as Amazon shipped this with several other "non-book" heavier items and the cover on this book was BENT when I received it! Through no doing of Amazon's packers, the cover did manage to survive "cracking" under the weight, so I had to turn it over on its front for a few days with a good bit of weight on top of it to get it right again. But if you are looking for a gift for a "Steeler Maniac," this is a great buy on Amazon, even with the cover bent. I would just advise ordering it with other books and not any heavy "non-book" items as it was just thrown in the bottom of a box. We've ordered all books in a shipment from Amazon before and never had a problem (to be fair) so it was just "one of those things" although I feel they should have placed something (a piece of flat cardboard) between the books and the other "non-book" items I bought to protect the books in the shipment. My review would have been 5 stars if it wasn't for this "packing" issue.

Great historical perspective with a little extra syrup
As a lifelong Steeler fan, this was a must-read, a tome that belongs on my bookshelf along with "Doing it Right" by Jim O'Brien. Mr. Rooney's accounting of history is first-hand and basically unscrubbed. He talks about the things he, his father, and the Steeler staff did right over the years, and the things they did wrong (e.g., Unitas, Marino). He tells you who are the good guys and the troublemakers. He takes you from the earliest beginnings of the NFL on through to the hiring of Mike Tomlin. It's a little tricky to follow chronologically because he gets off-topic and rambles now and then (I found myself thinking "wait a minute, that's not... what year was this supposed to be?). And there are some outright errors, which are mentioned in other reviews. The style is very (very!) homey, as you would expect, with an almost turn-of-the-century charm throughout. But in the end, you believe that Dan Rooney really is that sincere and genuine, and schmaltzy, and that's why so many people love him. Come to think of it, who doesn't like Dan Rooney? (Sorry, I haven't read Al Davis' book).

The Rooney's and Steelers are one of a kind.
I wanted to read this myself. I think everyone knows the Steelers' organization is different than most teams because of the owners. It was interesting to read how it all got started. The Rooney's treat everyone the same. They don't see color. You can't say that about many people. They have an open door policy for employees and players. They place emphasis on honor and integrity.

NFL History Personalized
Being a lifelong Steeler fan, I loved Dan's accounts of player interactions and key games I remember. On top of that, I have always loved history in any fashion and to read accounts of the birth of the NFL, Art Rooney's exploits as a young man, how each of the commissioners were elected and what contributions each made, and Dan's commentary on the various NFL club owners was all very enlightening. If you are a Steeler fan, you most definitely will enjoy reading all his commentary. His brother Art also wrote a book that is fantastic from a player scouting and selection standpoint called "Ruanaidh" which is the Gaelic representation of Rooney. It is a great companion work to Dan's book.

Lots of inside information on the early years of the NFL
Overall, a very good book for anyone interested in the early years of the NFL and how the NFL is run from an owners perspective. If you are a fan of the Steelers and/or the city of Pittsburgh, I would highly recommend this book. The author gives insights and tells stories about the formative years of the NFL,with firsthand knowledge about the formation of the players union, the first television contracts etc. Mr Rooney also gives a season by season recounting of the Steelers seasons with inside information on what the management was thinking as the events unfolded. I read the whole book in the course of 3-4 days and I found it very informative and entertaining.

Good book. Highly recommend for any NFL/football fan
Good book. Highly recommend for any NFL/football fan. I bought it for myself for a trip. Read it very quickly. The Rooney's are football royalty and this book tells you why. Their is also good information about the early NFL and how it grew to what it is today.I highly Recommend it. I only gave it 4 out of 5 stars because I am a Browns fans and I am jealous of that great organization and its people. Clearly a top 3 organization in the league and this book will show you why as well.

A Solid Book on the Steelers History
This book was a nice and easy read. It gives us a historic look at one of the greatest football teams in history: The Pittsburgh Steelers. At the same time we get a good inside look as to how the NFL was built into the powerhouse it is today. A lot of the facts and insights were very interesting.I highly recommend this book to Steelera fans and I also recommend it to NFL and sports fans. However, I must say that if you're not a Steelers fan you will not enjoy as much. Nevertheless, a non steers fan, like myself, will still appreciate it.

Dan Rooney: my 75 yrs with the Pitsburg Steelers & NFL
I bought this for my son-in-law as a Christmas present. He started reading it and could not put it down. He kept telling my daughter about little passages in the book. Some of which brought tears to his eyes. He called me, all the way from Qatar, to tell me Thank you for the book. It was the best present ever that he could of received. They are both stationed in Qatar with the Air Force and now my daughter is reading it and she is not even a football fan. They said it makes them feel almost like they are at home.Alice Gess, Holyoke, MA
