Great game gets an update, but I’m not sure yet if it’s all improvements *Updated*
I have been a fan of Betrayal at House on the Hill 2nd Edition for years, but since my son took that one to college I was excited to pick up the new 3rd Edition. The new version has been updated and streamlined quite a lot, and I think all the changes are individually great. Taken collectively, I’m wondering if maybe the game is now a bit too streamlined. I need a few more plays to be sure, but I suspect it strongly. The Good:The new artwork is much more vibrantly colored, without being cartoony. The Haunt Roll can no longer trigger on the first or second Omen cardThere are significantly fewer tiny little tokens to keep track of.The overall gameplay is the same as the previous version, and there are still 50 different possible Haunts. The players can now choose a background reason for why they are exploring the House, which affects the style of Haunts they will trigger, rather than it being completely random. The Less Good:Fewer Omen cards may mean less thematic variety in the HauntsUnpainted grey figurines are less immersive than the fully painted figures from the previous version.Certain rooms have had their special effects simplified, nerfed, or removedPlayers may no longer steal items from other players, so less interactionPlayer haunt information is now open - no keeping secrets from your opponentsSo, in a nutshell, it’s still a great game but I have concerns that it may have been over-simplified. I’ll have to play a few more games to check.UPDATE:I have now played several more games, and I regret to say that my initial impressions were right. Don’t misunderstand me, it’s still a great game and highly recommended, and I will still play it and enjoy it, but for people who played and loved the 2nd Edition, this one will feel kind of nerfed in comparison. If you never played the 2nd Edition, or played it and found it too fiddly or overcomplicated, then this version may be exactly what you’re looking for.

My Grail Game
This was the game that got me into modern board gaming!... well, technically it was the 2nd edition, but I actually think this one is an improvement! The Game is vastly repayable with a modular mansion built at your direction with some random tiles being drawn and placed ensuring that almost every game exploring the mansion is unique. And the good news is you discover the rooms and their items and omens with friends... until one of them isn't friendly anymore. Let's clarify, this isn't a table flipping Monopoly kinda board game that makes you hate your buddy, but the uniqueness of this game is that what starts off as a quest together ends in Betrayal in one of 50 uniquely written scenarios that trigger midgame pitting your once companion(s) against you. There are very few playthroughs of this game that fail to be unique as you not only have the modular format of laying tiles out for your mansion but you essentially have 100 different ways to experience the objectives that decide the conclusion. While the game can have a lot of components and take up a decent bit of table space, this is not one you and your friends should pass up!
