Smooth, Reliable, and Adjustable – Great for Home or Business Use

I installed the FORTSTRONG Door Closer on a frequently used entry door in my home, and I’m really impressed by how well it performs for the price. It’s sturdy, adjustable fit, and gives a nice, quiet, smooth close every time—no more slamming or doors being left open. The installation instructions were clear, and it came with everything needed for surface mounting, including a detailed diagram. It’s UL listed and ADA compliant, which gave me extra confidence in its quality. I had it mounted and adjusted in under an hour, even without pro tools. This is a Grade 3 hydraulic closer, and it handles a standard residential interior or exterior door easily—but would also work well for a light commercial setting. The adjustable spring tension and sweep speed make it super versatile depending on your door weight and closing preference. The silver finish looks clean and professional, and the closer itself feels solid—not flimsy or lightweight like cheaper models I’ve tried before. If you're looking for a reliable, easy-to-install door closer for your home, office, or shop, this is a great value. I’ll definitely be grabbing another one for my garage entry.

Very hard to open door but works and is quiet

Followed the instructions. Didn't realize the arm coming from the hydraulic door mounted part should not be 90 degrees as it shows in all its diagrams. The arm mounted above the door should be 90 degrees.Getting the arm from above the door to slide down over the arm from the hydraulic portion was a bit hard. I did bang on it a few times with my heavy duty side cutters. This did leave some minor chips in the paint which will probably rust at some point. However, a snug fit is probably better then a loose fit. When you take the parts out of the package you will immediately be impressed with this ultra heavy duty feeling door closer. All the parts feel like heavy duty steel. I doubt they are truly heavy duty steel at this price, but whatever they are, everything is very heavy! After adjustment, the door closes and latches perfectly. The one downside is the door is VERY HARD to open. I even moved the part above the door over about 4 inches to see if it made it easier. It seemed to make it a little easier but the door is still very hard to open.Overall if you want to stop people leaving doors open or slamming doors, this is a great solution. I ordered four. Just finished the first one. Three more to go. Will I get them installed before you order yours, receive it, and install it?Choosing between kiddo constantly slamming all the doors in the house inducing fight or flight all day long or having doors that are hard to open but never slam, I am going no slam every time. Which do you prefer?

Works perfectly

Works perfectly, just follow the instructions and measurements(very important). If there’s too much pressure and the door slams hard all you need to do is adjust pressure and speed (2 screws on the side) with a screwdriver.

Works perfectly easy to install

Works but still 10lb force to open.

Used this on our solid core door to our garage. Installed on the garage side, which is not standard, but denoted as option in the instructions. Needed a 1" spacer under foot to be able to reach door face. Moved foot to different spots on door and was unable to reduce door open force. It's not bad, but more force to open than we like. Spent 4 hours trying to install and adjust. Not mentioned in install, but turn speed screws all the way in initially, then back off to desired closing speed. I thought closer was broken until I did this. Also, don't use template. Just use closer as template for holes, along with level and ruler. We will see about durability. I heard may be sensitive to temperatures, etc. if I did over, I might have evaluated different option, one with opening force adjustment.

Good auto door closer but don't trust the instructions

After reading several reviews, I had the closer installed without too much trouble. Yes, it's not for doors with elaborated trims.First you would want to compare the body with the instruction template to see if they match. If so, then the template is good for drilling the pilot holes for the body.Secondly, it would be a good idea to unscrew and disconnect the connecting arm from the adjustable telescopic arm. After then, put the connecting arm to the square bolt on the body. This make the installation of the shoe easier. For the shoe and the telescopic arm, I put it further away from the body. The distance is about 2.5 inches, measuring from the outer most screw of the body to the closer screw of the shoe. The shoe should placed at the EN#2 position (i.e., the oblong hole of the shoe is closer to the hinges). After the shoe was installed, it's relatively easy to turn the connecting arm a little bit to be reconnected with the the telescopic arm.Last, adjust the telescopic arm and the two speed screws (set them to very slow).Right now, the door closes slowly and smoothly. It's also quite easy to open.

Works nicely once you get past the instructions

Sure wish the instructions were more helpful. First thing they should endure is mentioned and reenforced is the adjustment screws need to be facing the hinge side. Second there is no mention about adjusting the threaded rod - how or why. Third, the assumption is no trim around the door that protrudes out past surface of door - you end up either trying to move opener down a bit more (missing top inner rail of door and holes to patch) or doing some trimming of the frame so the arm doesn’t stop the door closing fully. Last, not any real explanation about what either adjustment screw is for or examples. Also missing is how to adjust opening tension. There are a few things mentioned that imply it can be done, but nothing is clear. To further confuse you, there are 2 specific forces mentioned for standard or wider doors (EB2 and EB3) but no mention on how to use that info. There is one place that implies it has to do with the direction of the shoe mounted to the door frame over the door. However later in the troubleshooting section it shows that the only correct orientation is the EB3 way. Other than that (and 4 install cycles and some patching, it works.
