FIREPOT Dal and Rice with Spinach - Healthy VEGAN Dehydrated Expedition Food

My favourite of these freeze dried meal makers. Actually had a depth of flavour and an authentic spice mix. Normally I like super hot food but not so much when on the trail! So this was perfect - pretty mild but still tasty. Well done Firepotters

Easy to prepare and reasonable taste, just as described on the packet. As a hiking food for wild-camping, very expensive and I will be buying Uncle Ben's Spicy rice (or similar brand) as it does the same job for 10% of the price.

I actually really like the firepot meals and have generally really enjoyed every meal I've tried so far but I must say this one was completely tasteless and I would not recommend it unless you really have no choice!

Tasty meal made with quality ingredients in a robust pouch. One flaw: in-pouch rehydration instructions give a ‘fill-level’ for addition of hot water. This is meaningless because the volume below the fill-level varies enormously depending on the shape of the pouch at filling. Not quite thought through.

I've also tried the FIREPOT Chilli Con Carne which is also excellent, but this was actually my favourite. Kept me nice and warm on a cold night. Would buy again for my next trip. Highly recommended.

There's 500kcalories in one pack. That's a lot for such a small amount of food.There's plenty of different flavours bouncing around the mouth and lots of varying textures - crunchy lentils, semi firm rice and other softer textures.It advises to use 350ml of boiling water into the packet. I found this to be too much water. The rice was runny instead of fluffy.It advises to leave for 15 minutes but the rice was barely warm after this length of time, it had cooled considerably. Perhaps on a hot day it won't cool so quickly.For the price I think it's rather expensive. Although it's nice and full of flavour it's not something I would buy regularly.I advise trying a little less water to start and perhaps using a pot to heat it up rather than the bag. You can't put this bag in a microwave.There doesn't appear to be any ingredients in it that would be a no-no to a vegan or halal so I am assuming it's fine for those people too.I have enjoyed it and I would think it a suitable food source for traveling and hiking but it's a little expensive for what you get in my opinion. Others may think differently

Very light to carry and a really tasty meal. Will definitely buy more of this brand, very impressed by quality and taste.

Disappointed is the word to use. After watching loads of hiking videos on YouTube and these meals being highly recommended I decided to order some to try. This Dal version I was most interested to try but what a let down. I followed the instructions, used boiling water from the kettle and even after the 15 minutes the rice was hard and it was very watery. In the end I had to pour the contents into a pan and cook it further to soften the rice.Luckily I am trying these meals out before going on a wild camp and this one gets a big NO GOOD.It lacked flavour apart from some heat and spinach was nowhere to be found.The porcini mushroom version has been the best one out of the four I purchased.This review is about the product only and does not affect the third party seller as they sent it out faultless and in good time.
