Doctor Star & The Kingdom of Lost Tomorrows: From the World of Black Hammer

Buy now - it is being re-released as Doctor Andromeda and the Kingdom of Lost Tomorrows
The story and art are very moving. This is being re-released as "Doctor Andromeda and the Kingdom of Lost Tomorrows". From what I can tell they are removing the "para-wand" and making all the action happen with a gauntlet instead. Perhaps someone sued as a copyright infringement for the DC character Starman, who similarly uses a power staff that he invented to fight crime, etc. ... Anyway, I ordered that too (it is pre-release right now) so I will know what the difference is when I get it.

Sad and powerful.
I am new to the Blacm Hammer universe and i have been reading a graphic novel a week and all of them have been great so far Doctor Star was beyond words, it was a very heartfelt and sad story, the last page of the story, almost brought tears to my eyes. Black Hammer is a great story and I hope it gets a movie or show down the line.

I’m not crying... you are
This story is so heartfelt and moving. We always read about the amazing adventures that superheroes go on and the battles they conquer, this story pulls back and shows you the people in that hero’s life that suffers in their absence. This is a heartbreaking story about Doctor Star facing the consequences of neglecting his family relationships culminating into a final important choice. The character development he goes through from beginning to end as he reflects on his life is really fantastic and I couldn’t recommend reading this book enough.

Fantastic Story
Lemire is such an amazing writer. I recently got into the world of Black Hammer, and after reading volumes 1 and 2, I picked this up. I think it's so cool that he created this BH universe and then choose to take deeper dives into some of the peripheral characters like Doc Star. This is a heartbreaking tale, but such a fantastic story! Absolutely loved it.

Touching Black Hammer Side Story
Nice side story set in the Black Hammer universe. At times, it feels like an Elseworlds Starman tale, but with real personal repercussions. Emotional narrative by Jeff Lemire with great artwork by Max Fiumara that goes above and beyond.

Gut-wrenching, but beautiful
Typical Jeff Lemire wreaking havoc with my emotions! The other reviewers probably summed this up better than man, so I’ll just add to the praise that this story here is amazing - no other way about it. This guy is a master story teller that’s unrivaled by just about anyone out there - damn.

This is a great book
I recently became a fan of Max Fiumara's art, and discovered he illustrated this stand alone "Black Hammer" story. It is written like the main books, by one of my favorite comic writers working today, Jeff Lemire. Together they spin an incredibly powerful story of tragedy, loss and time you can never get back.

There's a star man, waiting in the sky
Jeff Lemire and Dean Ormston's superb Black Hammer has now generated three fine spin-off mini-series, which I guess means it's now a franchise. The whole enterprise is, in part, an enormous love-letter to the great superhero comics of the past, and "Doctor Star" is a tribute to the Golden Age in general and another revisionist classic, James Robinson's "Starman", in particular (Doctor Star's secret identity just happens to be James Robinson: this is unlikely to be a coincidence). There's also some tipping of the cowl to the Silver and Bronze Age Green Lantern Corps. There's not an awful lot of plot in this short volume so to avoid spoilers let's just say it's the biography of Dr Star from his origins in the 1940s through to the present day, or whatever passes for the present day in Spiral City. There are adventures, but there's also, and it's more important, the story of the Doc's relationships with his wife and son. This is the heart of the book, much as the personal, emotional stories are the heart of the whole Black Hammer franchise, and why Lemire's vision is more than just another clever riff on superhero tropes (though there's no doubting it's an EXCEPTIONALLY clever, and unusually sweet-natured, riff on superhero tropes). So this is an imaginative and moving story. Much of the credit goes to Max Fiumara's lovely art, which, like all good comic art, so smoothly incorporates lots of information into its storytelling that you don't consciously realise how much it's conveying to you. Fiumara is equally adept with grand cosmic visions (there's a lovely tribute to Brian Bolland) and telling personal moments, a combination which many artists would struggle with. He's particularly good at body language, making the story deeply affecting, again without the reader consciously noting what's going on. Clear, effective story-telling is often lost in contemporary comic book art, and undervalued by some readers, but Fiumara is a master of it. Some may find his work too cartoony, but that would be seriously missing the point. In essence, this is an intelligent, heartfelt and accessible book, though probably even more accessible if you've read the core title first, to which you are promptly directed. If Amazon allowed us to do it, I'd grade it four and a half, rather than five, stars, only because it's a very brief read and it's a let-down it doesn't go on longer, but leaving a reader wanting more is hardly a major fault with a book. Lovely stuff.

The story looks very interesting, and the artwork is good too!
I've just received this book - so have only browsed through the pages, and had a read of the story-line, on the back. I've not previously read any of the Black Hammer stories, but, I'm looking forward to reading this graphic novel. One of the reviews (on the back of this comic book) has written, that, THIS G.N, CAN stand on it's own, as a single story. So, that is how I'm going to treat it, so to speak. Great. Looking forward to starting it! Thanks.
