The Handmaid's Tale (Graphic Novel): A Novel

Not the original novel
I purchased this book thinking it was a novel. It is actually a comic book - granted, made very well and with some nice artistry, but I was wanting to read the original source novel. For "Handmaid's Tale" enthusiasts this might be a nice collectors item but it it not the original book. I reread the description on Amazon and can't find where it makes this clear. Maybe that's what "graphic novel" means - but I was not aware of this. Sorry that I originally gave this item a poor rating. My fault that I didn't know what "graphic novel" meant. Still, others might make the same mistake and hope this clarifies what you are buying.

Great story, in graphic novel format!
I ordered the graphic novel and that’s what showed up—because I actually read the item description before ordering and haven’t worked over the ratings for it to make up for my mistake.

Wonderful hardcover “Graphic” Novel!
I purchased this knowing full well what a graphic novel was! I was looking forward to receiving the hardcover, and viewing the detailed art/illustrations by Renee Nault. I’ve read the book itself, listened to the Audible version and follow the series on Hulu. I like Graphic novels also. This is a fine hardcover (even The Walking Dead Compendiums are not hardcovers)!Kudos to Renée Nault on her work on this, beautiful crafted artwork, tastefully done in a world of dark times for all woman owned by Gilead. Showing light, bright and shades of dark colors all where needed within the storyline. The eyes are the windows to the soul - Human souls here showing good, bad and ones will. It’s really easy to follow the flow of the story/illustrations, typesetting. Glad I made this purchase - looking forward to see what else Renée brings forth! Maybe the upcoming release in September of The Testaments?! Also thanks Margaret Atwood for such a great book!Nolite te bastardes carborundorum!

Captures the spirit of the Atwood novel
I've now read "The Handmaid's Tale" three times. Once, in the 80s when I was in high school when it came out. Twice, about 10 years ago, to re-read a classic. And now, I've read the graphic novel of the book.I recognized this book as a science fiction classic when it first came out. With parallelisms to societies today taken over by fundamental religious groups it presents a harrowing world where women, in a strange way; are actually in control. But not in ways they imagined. With the birth rate down, some women are deemed useable for breeding only. Once the baby is born, as long as it is normal then one's place is set in society. The Handmaiden at the center of the "Handmaid's Tale" is one of those women, kept by a family, free to do certain things, but not really "free" in this alternate society unless she gives birth to a healthy baby. The novel as this graphic novel does ends abruptly. The illustrations are illustrations that are perfect in describing the horror of the new world the heroine of the book finds herself in. My only issue is that in this adaptation, none of the humor in the actual book is present, and there are dsome darkly funny moments. This should be used as a companion to the actual novel, which is essential fantasy/science fiction reading as much as the "Lord of the Rings" series or "Dune" is. If you like graphic novel adaptations overall you will enjoy this, but if this is your first introduction to the wonderful work by Atwood please read the novel first.

Wonderful retelling of a chilling tale
I absolutely am obsessed with graphic novel versions of classic books, I find them to be so wonderful. They capture a different side of the story that just the words are not able to tell. I had just finished reading the Anne Frank graphic novel and found this book in the suggested section. I read this book in one night, I could not put it down. The artwork is stunning, the words just as powerful as in the novel. I highly recommend you reading this version of the Handmaid's Tale, whether it's your first time ever reading it, you've read the novel before or just seen the show. You will not regret it!

So disappointed
I'm apparently an idiot because I didn't realize that graphic novel meant an adult comic book. I thought graphic meant explicit. I don't care, laugh at me. I was so disappointed I haven't even looked at the book, nevermind read it.

This is a comic/graphic novel
This book is a reimagining of the original novel in the form of a graphic novel - like a comic book. If you are a fan of the novel or the TV show you will probably also enjoy this. The illustrations are beautiful and haunting.

Very well done
Both given as gifts, but to rave reviews. (I read one before I gave it, too.)Does a good job of telling the whole story which was hard to condense, and the illustrations are top notch. To the reviewers who state they thought they were getting the whole book — read the description. GRAPHIC NOVEL. It’s another (and well respected) genre.

Und das will was heißen.
