Just Trying To Help..
The wiring is a bit confusing and defies normal thinking. I'll try to clarify.. Also, only works with low voltage D.C.Black: Ground to battery or power source ONLY! The load common or ground is not involved with this connection at this point..White: Positive to the switch AND the positive connection of the load goes to the positive of the battery together in parallel..Red: This is the actual switched wire. It switches the ground to the load. Not normal but it is what it is..The WHITE wire AND the Positive Connection of the Load goes directly to the positive connection of the source or battery.. Both wires.. The load and the switch positive in parallel..The BLACK wire from the switch goes directly to the negative or ground of the source or battery. **This will be the only ground or common connection to the source or battery..The RED wire is the actual switched wire. It switches the ground or common connection of the load to the source or battery. **The red wire of the switch connects to the load common or ground and nothing else..Black.. Ground or Common to the source or battery ONLY!White.. Positive in parallel with the load positive.. Direct to the source or battery..Red.. SWITCHED ground or common to the load.. **DO NOT SHORT this wire to the ground of the source or battery! This will destroy the switch! Only connect to the load!!Hope this helps..

12 volt photo cell switch does not work.
This device does not work. Hooked up one way, the light stays on all the time. Hooked up the other way, the light never comes on. I returned the first one thinking it was just defective and another one would be OK. Wrong! The second one wired exactly as shown on the diagram (I happen to be a retired electrician) started smelling hot when connected to a 12 volt DC battery. Then it got so hot you could not touch it with your bare hand. I looked this up on the internet and found numerous negative reviews. Some purchasers said theirs did work, but the wiring diagram was wrong. Most say it is Chinese junk and to not waste your money or time on it. Just buy a better one.

Works great
Thanks so much for the fella who posted the video here explaining how to wire the thing.I have it connected to a 12v light I have hanging outside my shed. I have a battery that's charged by solar panels and it's nice to have this turn on and off automatically. I installed the light for my dogs to give them some extra light to do their business on the side of the house. I have this mounted through a hold I drilled through the LP Smartside siding I have on the shed which is 3/8" thick. My only gripe/suggestion is that the round section of the sensor was a little too short for me. You unscrew the little plastic nuts (comes with 2 nuts and a rubber washer), slip it through the hole, then (from the outside) slide the washer over, then one or 2 nuts.Once I slid it through the hole, I didn't have room to install the washer and the nut, so I had to use a razor blade to take away some of the thickness of the washer. If that section were long enough it'd be easier to install. This is just a minor inconvenience, however, in the grand scheme of things. And don't forget to wait about 10 seconds when you're testing for it to turn off/on. You also need to use the palm of your hand - if you use a finger it won't activate it since it's pretty sensitive.Overall I'm very pleased with this super-cool little thing!

wire it wrong and it fails immediately
Wire diagram on side of photocell is not correct. This is clearly warned in the photos and others review. Because of this, is why it gets 4 out of 5. Believe it when it says do not wire wrong. I burned up the first one in seconds, because I tried to wire from memory. Don't!!!! Wire it while looking at the wiring diagram in the photos

This is a great product and works perfectly. Don't reverse polarity!!
I purchased this to trigger an automatic chicken door on my coop. I have a background of electronic circuit design so I was comfortable building this. I was concerned about this product because of the reviews, but realized the bad reviews are from people who probably hooked it up wrong. It is unforgiving! I bought two of these because the first one worked perfectly in my initial testing, but while building, i accidentally hooked my circuit to the battery backwards... This device never worked again. I ordered another identical to it, and was careful. It is working great!! Please not, that it isn't a typical switch. You connect the + wire directly to the load, then run your - wire through this device. It has a transistor circuit on the inside that switches the ground on and off when the light sensor is activated.

Not what I expected.
I apparently did not read the whole description because this switch switches the ground & that will not work for my application.

Unacceptably poor and dangerous quality control.
This item was miswired from the factory. The white and black wires were soldered together, creating a dead short. The test battery kept getting hot and the unit not working so we opened it to inspect. Delayed the install of a system and could have damaged it. No thanks.

DOA
As one that is highly qualified in electrical problems after spending over 40 years in the industry, this item was dead out of the box. Both in my solar lighting application and on my test bench afterward, I could not get it to work on a small 12VDC application. There were no instructions except for the small printed diagram on the side of the device. A current rating of the device was also unavailable, but. I am guessing it may only be 3 amps. My load was just over 1 .5 amp so I was not over or under on its capacity.

Don't waste your money.
Wiring diagram on side of unit doesn't work and in fact produces a short and a spark. Wiring instructions found later from "supposedly" someone works for company suggests very non-intuitive wiring scheme. When I tried that it still didn't work. I bought 6 of them, that's $100 wasted on junk garbage. There seems to be no easy way to ask for a refund!!!

Cheap is as cheap does
Never could get these to work properly. Chased down all the rabbit holes for alternate installation guides; to no avail. Its a relatively simple circuit, I ended up building my own from scratch,If it's common knowledge that the diagram on the device is not accurate, then maybe spend the 15 mins it would cost you to update the diagram?Fail.

Fonctionne à merveille pour le VR
Shéma pas évident du faire des recherche sur le net pour comprendre le branchement fabriquant utilise le positif comme commun et coupe le ground pas trop orthodoxe

Poor product
No matter what way you hook it up it doesn't work . Instructions are hilarious. The plastic peice fell out and got lost while i pushed it through the hole while mounting . Junk don't buy
