Swan Song for the Switch

I don't write product reviews often, but I felt I should take the time with this item. With less than a year (supposedly) until we have a "Switch 2", I decided to freshen up my Switch as I try to knock out any remaining games I want finish before the next console. I wanted a full set of features with this new handheld. My main criteria: comfort/ergonomics, gyro, vibration, back paddles.First I'll talk about two other popular options I tried and finish with my Nexigo gripcon experience in the last few paragraphs.I've used the Holi split pad pro quite a bit, and while it does feel REALLY great in hand it's missing gyro and vibration. Might not matter to some, but in my new handheld I wanted something with the full suite of features. The Nitro Deck has been getting a lot of attention lately, and I tried that as well. The build quality is great, and while is has gyro, vibration, back paddles... honestly the ergonomics did not appeal to me. It feels closer to a Steam Deck in hand and in appearance, but not nearly as comfortable. And the right thumbstick in relation to the ABXY buttons was also a problem many others have reported. You could probably get used to it, but it was very awkward for me. Another issue was the lack of adjustable vibration - could only be set to on/off and to me it was too distracting when on. Less is more when it comes to rumble in my opinion... playing Mario Wonder the thing was buzzing constantly. Honestly I think the Nitro Deck looks good, and certainly has some great marketing, but it just wasn't enjoyable in hand to me.Which finally brings me to the product at hand, this Nexigo Hall effect gripcon. This thing is the culmination of all their previous models, has every feature you could want - I won't list them all here as you can read the product description, but this is one of the few decks out there that does "everything" and wraps it up in a package with superb build quality (really, I'd compare it to the Nintendo pro controller) and looks great as well. The Gripcon fits my average sized male hands very comfortably - FAR more so than the Nitro Deck, the ergonomics are no comparison. Thumbsticks feel fantastic and are in perfect position in relation to the d-pad and ABXY buttons. Vibration is adjustable to several different intensities, a rare feature but was key to me. The lightest setting is perfect for me - subtle, not overbearing, but it's there. Also, this thing is it's own dock, which is a really cool feature I wasn't even looking for. Your Switch can live in the Nexigo, because all you need to do for docked mode is pop your USB-C and HDMI cable into it and you're good to go. Yank em out when you want to go portable again. So easy - not to mention it upscales the video output to 4K which is something the branded Switch Dock does NOT do. It even has a USB-A slot so you can hook up, for example, a headphone dongle. Add in a few other bells & whistles like cartridge storage slots, turbo, and a kickstand because why not? If I had one criticism, it's that the ABXY buttons are a *little* bit "clicky" for my taste, but honestly after a couple minutes of play I don't even notice. After trying out multiple grips/attachments, reading many reviews, and sifting though plenty of comparable products, in my opinion this Gripcon is the pinnacle of Switch handheld (and docked) play. I would recommend this to anyone who owns a Switch.

You can finally play GoldenEye in handheld mode.

Your Nintendo Switch will recognize this as a wired pro controller, which means you can remap the buttons through the Nintendo Switch menu, which means you can play GoldenEye and Perfect Dark with modern-like controls, while still in handheld mode. That part was important to me. If that's important to you, you'll be pleased with this controller.

Compared with ECHZOVE, Hori, and NexiGo's non-dock version.

TL-DR; Almost my winner.I tested four controllers each with platformers, isometrics, FPS's, RPG's, and racing games. Any games needing motion controls were avoided, with one brief exception. Sticks were recalibrated for each controller. Can't comment on long term build quality for any of them, but across the board they were all lightweight and solid feeling devices.Things noted but are not factors in my decision:- Motion controls (prefer disabled/none)- RGB anything, ever- Dock features (neat trick, but wouldn't use it)- Kickstands- Macros and turbo buttons. Didn't think turbo buttons were cool in 1990, opinion hasn't changed.I have a V1 switch. My hand size is average-large adult. Large enough that Gamecube controllers feel cramped, and the original Xbox controller was great. My notes follow below::: NexiGo Hall Effect Dock GripconGood:- Favorite ZL/ZR triggers by far. Not too much range with a very nice non-clicky break.- Tightest quietest rumble (best)- Dock features are neat, didn't test them. Assuming they work as advertised.- Top located charging port is really nice. Don't need to find the right-angle USB cable to rest it on my chest when laying down.- Split cross membrane DPAD feels similar to DualShock 4 (also I prefer split cross, so bonus). I wish ABXY felt the same. My unit's DPAD has a tracking error: down also inputs right. (Not a con, I'd just RMA it if I was going to stick with this model.)- Grip comfort is a toss up with the non-dock purple Gripcon. The shape and size feel nice, but I think I prefer the slightly larger size of the non-dock model. I can't tell which shape I'd prefer if the dock Gripcon was a little bit bigger. Both are good choices.- Guide rails & solid lock up when inserting switch. No hunting for the USB port, it's very nice.- No clearance issue in back with the gamecard slot.Meh:- Stick inputs aren't as smoothly progressive as the purple non-dock Hall Effect Gripcon, likely different sensors. Still better than ECHZOVE. Hat size feels fine with the included caps installed. Lacks the sweet texturing of the purple Gripcon's sticks. If I hadn't compared them, I'd be content with them.- Macros are a bit more fiddly to set upBad:- ABXY buttons way, way too firm, and not something I'd learn to live with.- Ergonomically worse than the non-dock Gripcon: The right stick needs more horizontal offset from the ABXY buttons. Because of the grip's shape and wrist angle, the right stick interferes with rolling the B & Y buttons pretty badly. Another deal breaker.:: NexiGo Hall Effect Gripcon (purple galaxy)Good:- Sticks are fantastic. Surprisingly linear curve, and I wish my other controllers had their edge texturing. Thumbs will never slip off these. Superb inputs for FPS games.- ABXY membrane pressure is close to a DualSense (the GOAT), though the buttons are a little taller.- DPAD is clicky like a joycon, with no play and good pressure. Wish they'd pick a lane and stay in it though; all membrane or all clicky.- General comfort is pretty good, but it doesn't fill the hand quite like the ECHZOVE. Not my top pick, but more than good enough. Fingers are supported and the wrist angle is decent.- Macro/turbo/RGB all tested fine and are simple to use.Bad:- Rumble is pretty lame. 100% strength isn't detailed or deep, just loud, cheap, and obnoxious. Playing on 20-40% strength is good though, and is where I'll leave it set.- Motion controls: Tilt for up-down: Fine. Turn like a steering wheel for left-right: Dumb.- I wish it aligned the switch better on insertion and stabilized the sides more, but it still feels solid once together. Probably fits an OLED more snugly.- Doesn't have the clearance on the back to allow the gamecard slot to open fully.:: ECHZOVE controllerGood:- Easily the most comfortable in the hands, of the four units I tested. Its deep belly fills all four fingers and provides a very solid grip.- The buttons and DPAD aren't anything special, but they're fine. A little noisy, but they didn't annoy me.Bad:- The ZL/ZR triggers have analog range, but aren't analog. Annoying, especially while racing.- The sticks have a pretty nonlinear progression throughout their range, it's difficult to sweep smoothly. Also, the right stick ergonomics are oddly cramped, despite how large and comfortable the grip is. Basically: lousy for FPS but fine for others.- All the replaceable stick caps are meh, and they come off too easily.- The rumble is way over the top and rattles every button. Pretty silly.:: Hori Split Pad Pro's (officially licensed)Good:- Buttons and sticks are nice and smooth.Bad:- Least favorite of all. Ergonomically all wrong for me. Too thin, oddly angled, no belly to support ring and pinky fingers.- Switch feels weird and awkward to hold.- Too expensive for the features they lack: rumble, motion/gyro, bluetooth, macros, turbo, rgb, etc.- I don't like them, for any game type.:: ConclusionIn the end, I kept NexiGo's Hall Effect Gripcon (non-dock, purple galaxy) and sent the rest back. I was going to try the CRKD Nitro Deck and a few others that mostly seem to be NexiGo clones (binbok, etc), but I think it'd just be more of the same and I'm feeling pretty done with this project. If the dock Gripcon was a little meatier, they fixed the buttons and the right stick/ABXY interference, AND used the non-dock Gripcon's sticks, I'd probably have gone with the dock model. Makes me wonder whether I could create a Frankenstein Gripcon that has the best of both donors. Hmm...Anyway, don't try this at home, I'm what you'd call a professional, and thank you for reading the Long Winded Switch Controller review.

Makes it feel like a whole new console

Probably one of the best switch accessories money can buy, it makes it feel like a whole new console. The controller is comfortable especially for someone like me with big hands. The hall effect joysticks are great. The only gripe I have is that it is kind of ugly with the kind of clear colored plastic they use. That's pure preference though and shouldn't deter you from buying this, I have thoroughly enjoyed mine.
