Perfect for adjusting the rear sight on my Henry Big Boy
This was perfect for adjusting the rear sight of my .45 caliber Henry rifle. Yep. Old school. Loosen a screw and tap the base of the sight with a hammer. Always a brass hammer or better a hammer with a brass punch which this one came with. The hammer is nice and small so it doesn't take up much room in my ammo bag and the brass punch stores in the handle. The plastic and brass heads on the hammer unscrew for replacement, but I have no idea where you would get those. I just put some blue locktight on them since I have no reason to ever unscrew them. If I did use the hammer every day and the heads wore out then I would just buy another hammer. Oh, we loosened the screw on my Henry, which was shooting to the right, and gave the sight a few taps. We managed to get it right the first time as the rifle was dead on at 100 yards. :)

A must have item for shooters
The Lyman brass tap hammer is a must for the workbench and range bag. This small but mighty hammer has a brass face on one side and a nylon face on the other side. Both are removable and replaceable. The handle is heavily knurled for a great grip. The hammer includes a drift punch that stores inside the handle (and rattles a bit).I have used this hammer not only to do small work jobs - but also to tap gently on the slide of a pistol to free a jam (using the nylon face). To me, it is indespensible to have this in the range bag.The downsides are slight, but my only complaint about this hammer is that both faces tend to unscrew themselves with normal use, and the hollow handle cover also comes loose intermittently. These are not a big problem, but can be mildly annoying. It is necessary to check them regularly, or risk losing parts.I don't consider those slight complaints enough to withold a star from my rating, so I give it 5 stars because at the price (under $20) this is a well made and versatile tool.

Robust little hammer
Small but a robust little hammer. Its first job was punching the pins out of my CZ P-01 which was a bear, and it handled the task great. I gave the hammer 4 stars. The reason I took off a star is because the head have a tendency to come loose while you are hammering, and you have to stop to tighten them back in place. The problem was easily remedied though. I just wrapped a little Teflon tape around the threats of each head and that holds them in place a lot better. I do like this hammer mostly because of the thin handle. I find that with the thin handle the hammer is easier to control for precision work. All in all Im very happy with the purchase.

Quality
a lot of the hammers that come in the kits are low quality and bend at the shank. This is a high quality hammer that just feels nice and looks nice. I would recommend replacing the cheap one you have with this high quality piece.

Seems solid and perfect for the job
However, between the bin and the box Amazon managed to lose the included drift pin that's clearly marked on the packaging with an ARROW POINTING TO IT. So, back it goes. Maybe third time ordering will be the charm (first time, it got mangled in transit and was returned for credit before it ever arrived).UPDATE: Three tries and still can't get this product. I just don't get why Amazon's own delivery system cannot get this to me in one piece or at all.

Small enough for the range bag.
Works great in my range bag. It's large enough to get the job done without being too bulky to bring along. The brass drift it comes with fits inside the handle, so it isn't hard to find. Make sure the heads are tight before using, and they will stay there until you're done. I got this to adjust the sights on my Henry, and have used it now on several pistols and the WW1 and 2 milsurps I like to shoot. It also came in handy to clear a stuck cartridge in a buddy's AR at the range. I think a real gunsmith would probably want something with permanently mounted heads, but this works great at the range for quick tune ups. My only regret was waiting so long to buy it.

USA Made and excellent value for the money!
*********If the brass/nylon heads come loose and bother you, Lyman recommends applying Blue Loctite to the threads**********Made in USA. Very beautifully machined and knurled. Comes with a Brass and Delrin head- for gunsmithing use. The *STEEL* head is for general purpose work around the shop- ******NOT****** for gunsmithing. So stick to the brass and delrin heads for use on fine firearms. Some users complained about brass flakes from manufacturing process? Give me a break. American made at this price? Hard to beat! All 3 of the quick change hammer heads are machined perfectly flat as well, ideal for use with pin punches, etc!
