Nemasys vine weevil killer standard pack

I followed the instructions, which were clear and easy to follow. Checked the soil in my planters/troughs and the nematodes have worked. Definitely recommend and will use again if necessary.

Nematodes for vine weevil grubs.This is a small tray of powder which arrives in an envelope small enough to fit through a letterbox.In the sawdust like powder are millions of tiny worm eggs waiting to hatch out, they need to be kept in the fridge until you are ready/ the weather is ready to use them.They are marked with a use before date on the pack to ensure that you know when to use them and stop you waiting past the time which the eggs are no longer viable.The instructions are simple to follow, basically you add 1.5 litres of water and stir like crazy for the first part.This mix is then used as a concentrate for you to dilute into your watering can and apply to the areas where it is needed. You use 0.5l of mix in a 5 litre watering can with a large holed rose.The treatment is for use between March and October when the soil is warmer and the grubs are around, as the grubs are what the nematodes attack and kill rather than the eggs or adult beetles.If you think you have a vine weevil problem the signs are:plants that are limp and lacklustre and generally failing to thrive.Smaller plants may die altogether.Vine weevils like pot plants and if you dig into the soil in pots ( to add another plant for example ) you will come across small white “c” shaped grubs like fat, small maggots with brown heads.Vine weevils seem to prefer pots but will also attack those in the ground.If you grown strawberries in pots they are particularly prone for attack but these also go for primroses and many other potted trees and shrubs.I found the grubs in my strawberries, my hanging baskets, my (potted) twisted hazel and even in my bowl of succulents.When I took out the soil from the pots I found several c shaped grubs munching their way through the roots and destroying some very expensive plants😡.The only way to get rid of the grubs/eggs and beetles is to destroy them, you can get rid of most by changing the soil and squishing any grubs you see, but the eggs are too small to see and remove so a follow up treatment of nematodes will catch the grubs when they hatch, if it’s not possible to change the soil, such as in the case of large pots with shrubs in, this is where these nematodes come in to do the work for you.The nematodes work like this:The Nemasys Vine Weevil Killer nematodes (Steinernema kraussei), seek out the vine weevil larvae and attack the pest by entering natural body openings. Once inside, they release bacteria that causes blood poisoning stopping the larvae from feeding, quickly killing it. The nematodes then reproduce inside the dead pest and release a new generation of hungry infective nematodes, which disperse and search for further prey.To keep a minor problem at bay, one autumn treatment should be adequate. However, for a serious infestation, treat in the spring and again in the autumn. When treating pots take care that soil is not left to dry out. Nemasys Vine Weevil Killer will kill larvae present in the area and protect against further larvae damage for up to four weeks.******** 10 day update ******Today marks 10 days since applying the solution, I checked in my succulent bowl as one of the succulents in there was showing signs of attack ( yellow leaves, a soggy and lack lustre feel to the once firm leaves) and sure enough there was a grub munching its way through the stem.I emptied out the whole bowl of plants and sifted through the soil where I found 5 further grubs.Now in fairness to the nematodes we have had some freakish weather this year, dry, warm and sunny days followed by temperatures dropping into the minus figures over night and this may have killed off the nematodes as it was simply too cold for them so I can’t say for sure why this failed for me, only that it did fail for me.I will have to try again later in the year to see if I have more success .
