Keratin is a protein that makes up a large portion of your hair, nails, and outer layer of skin. I've been wanting to use it as an additive for my skincare and haircare products for some time now for the benefits it can provide. In my soaps, I use silk protein, which provides a really nice feel to the lather. While silk protein (aka fibroin) and keratin are similar, they are not identical.Keratin is practically insoluble in water. Most of the recipes I have found call for hydrolyzed keratin, which is not the same as the 100% keratin being offered here. In order to hydrolyze it, it needs to be broken down into amino acids by some type of strong alkali. I use lye to break down my silk protein and used the same for this keratin powder. It's important to keep the temperature of the lye solution low enough not to scorch the keratin and stink up the place something fierce. However, even in the best of situations, it will still stink like sulfur. Once the keratin is completely dissolved, the excess alkali in the solution needs to be neutralized if it is to be used in a skincare product. This can be done with any number of acids from citric to acetic to hydrochloric, but the product of the reaction will be different (i.e., sodium citrate, sodium acetate, sodium chloride, respectively).Once you have a pH neutral (for skin) or slightly acidic (for hair) solution of hydrolyzed keratin, you can feel free to add it to your skincare and haircare formulations as desired.

Without testing it is hard to rate quality, but I can say that this is a good amount for the cost, and it is a very fine powder which makes it easier to use in applications.

I am so excited that this finally arrived! I love MYOC products, they always work really well in my diy formulations. Recently, I have been getting into making natural hair products and I wanted to try adding in keratin to my shampoo/conditioner recipe. I haven’t tried it out in my recipes yet but I did try it out in a homemade keratin treatment. I did a usage rate of about 15% keratin along with glycolic acid, a couple of natural oils and a good hair mask. I heated the mask up a bit first and then added in the other ingredients (the keratin was pre-dissolved in a solution of glycolic acid). After thoroughly cleaning my hair, I spread the mixture and let sit for about 20 minutes. Then I dried it and flat ironed (similar to commercial keratin treatments). My hair feels fantastic and so soft now! I am really happy with this product and I can’t wait to use it for other recipes.

This is good for DIYing your own keratin treatment. Just mix into my shampoo. Hair's looking good.

As far as I can tell, this is exactly what it claims to be.It comes in a VERY fine and light powder, so there's the possibility that a fan will spread it all over the place. It's also odorless.Keratin is commonly used in glue, and this powder becomes very sticky when wet.I tried mixing up a water and the power in a 4% mixture, adding a lock of hair, then waiting a day to see if there was any visible changes under a microscope. Unfortunately, when I uncapped the vial there was a strong smell which indicates that there was some sort of bacteria that grew overnight. This makes sense, since keratin is a biological protein. I'm going to toy around with making more hair treatments, but whatever I add I'll need to ensure that I add some sort of preservative.As best I can tell, this product is indeed keratin.

This is a great amount for a beginner like myself. It’s perfect for my diy cosmetics making! Great value!

Hair care benefits with keratin. This keratin bag is super helpful for hair wash days. I love that the powder mixes well with my regular shampoo. The 50 g goes a long way. I only need to use a little at once.
